Virgin Aluminum oxide and silicon carbide are excellent abrasive for etching glass stone, wood and other solid surfaced materials. Aluminum oxide is an economical abrasive with good cutting ability and is used prevalently in the industry. However, it is dustier, causes more static and loses it sharpness quicker than Silicon Carbide. Silicon carbide is a more effective abrasive as a new cutting edges are revealed each time it breaks down into smaller particles. So while Silicon carbide is more expensive up front, it can be used much longer so as long as the sandblaster has a good separator reclaimer.
